The Last Lesson

Persecuted pupils - never heard of them? No wonder, because the fate of those who were discriminated against, expelled from school, sent to childrens' homes or even served prison sentences in the socialist dictatorships in Central Europe because of their political convictions or their church commitment, because of their lifestyle or musical taste or because of their pacifist convictions is little known. The consequences for the individual youths, however, were enormous. Not infrequently, small deviations from the norm could mean major cuts in their professional biographies and life plans.

Nikolaj Camp (codename A)

The Nikolaj Camp was one of the 18 prisoner labour camps operated by the Czechoslovak communist regime in the uranium mines of the Jáchymov, Horní Slavkov and Příbram regions. It was established in 1951 on the site of a former forced labour camp and shut down in 1958. Nikolaj, with a capacity of almost one thousand prisoners, was infamous for its brutal regime. In the early years, political prisoners represented a very small minority of its inmates and were often subject to open violence by the warders and other prisoners.

Study on Leukemia in the Czechoslovak Uranium Miners

Radon exposure has had long-lasting impacts on the health of Czechoslovak uranium miners, many of whom were political prisoners. While it is well known that radon exposure causes lung cancer, this study found that leukemia, and particularly chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), was also significantly associated with this exposure.

Secret Radio of Czechoslovak Political Prisoners

The year was 1957. The device was hidden in the latrine of camp Rovnost near Jáchymov. After destroying it, scout and mukl Miroslav Kopt hurriedly cleaned up its remains. This secret device was a radio on which the Czechoslovak political prisoners listened to Radio Free Europe for two years, receiving and spreading news from the west throughout the prison camp.

Learning from the Past: How to mediate historical topics in civic education

Exchange Trip to Jáchymov: April 2016

An exchange between American and Czech students who learned about the lives of political prisoners under Stalinism. Students translated, proofread and edited texts about the political prisoners’ experiences. This culminated in a two-day trip to the former prison sites and uranium mines near Jáchymov.

The Tap Tap Play for Political Prisoners in Jáchymov

The members of the Czech volunteer initiative Političtí vězni.cz invite you to an unique concert of the handicapped music band The Tap Tap, which will take place on 27th of June 2015 in the town of Jáchymov (North-West Bohemia, close to Karlovy Vary). On this day we commemorate the official Day of Political Prisoners in the Czech Republic, symbolizing the remembrance of those who were persecuted during the period of non-freedom in Czechoslovakia after 1948.

The Forum 2000 Panel Discussion

K. Ch. in Finland

Members of the civic organisation Political Prisoners.eu have introduced the documentary portrait of a former political prisoner Karla Charvatova in yet another foregin destination. The movie was presented on a free-of-charge screening in the Finnish city of Tampere. The presentation was followed by discussion with representatives of  academia and wide public.

We are excited  to announce the latest project of the volunteer research initiative Political Prisoners.eu: K. Ch., a documentary on the tragic yet ultimately uplifting story of a young woman raped, impregnated, and forced to give birth to her prison guard’s child in a former-Czechoslovakian prison in 1948.
